At the end of the summer I went on a backpacking trip and blew out my knee. I’ve already had one replaced and now I’m trying to stave off the inevitable round 2. I’m looking forward to the new knee but I dread the recovery period. It was almost 2 years before I felt like myself again.
In any case, there will be no vertical hiking of any kind, and no weighty backpacks. To make myself feel better I set up a camp in the woods beyond our backyard. My dogs love the freedom to explore and I get to do various bushcraft projects. I’m hoping to go on a winter camping trip. I want to try hot tenting. I’ve already tried hammock camping in the winter. I know most of my friends and family think I’m a special kind of crazy but I do love it.
So this week we were expecting the first snowstorm of the season. I’ve been gathering wood to build a shelter. I used the wood I already had with a poly tarp attached to make a lean-to. The snowstorm lasted over 48 hours. It was still snowing on the second day when I finally made it out there. We had 22″ of snow. The lean-to had only a dusting of snow at the edge. I shoveled out the fire pit and started a fire and set up a pot to make tea. The dogs had a blast finding sticks and galloping around.
I’m not a good videographer but I think I’m going to practice and see if I can improve. So check out my snow day.
